Strip Badly weathered stripper

Mon, 07/31/2017 - 13:55
Left out in the sun for too long. Finish is faded and cracked. Here is my question- Obviously, I will have to sand alot but how do I know when to stop sanding. The wood under the glass is in good shape and not weathered. I plan on putting a new layer of glass cloth over the entire hull. Any ...

Skin-on-Frame Best How-to Book for SOF?

Sun, 07/30/2017 - 12:14
Looking to build a SOF soon. "Building a Greenland Kayak" by Christopher Cunningham and "Fuselage Frame Boats" by Jeff Horton seem to be the two most popular list on Amazon, are there any other that people recommend? If you could only buy one book on SOF kayak building, which one would it be?

Skin-on-Frame Skin-on-Frame plans for larger paddlers?

Fri, 07/28/2017 - 19:51
I'm wanting to build a skin on frame kayak soon. Just about every set of plans that I've seen available on the web lists a maximum capacity of between 250-300lbs. I'm 275, so ideally I'd like to build a SOF kayak with at least a 350lb capacity as I like to do kayak camping trips and ...

Other Hot Coating

Fri, 07/28/2017 - 04:44
Getting ready to varnish my canoe and will do multiple coats, what is hot coating, adding another coat before previous coat is fully dry? Is this also done with epoxy, what are the variables?

Strip Where does the seat go?

Wed, 07/26/2017 - 16:53
I'm laying out the seat and back band (so close to done!). My initial thought was that the back band should basically just clear the coaming, and the back of the seat should be at the back band. This seems about right when I sit in the kayak in the yard. However, my experience is low. Looking ...

Strip Joining deck and hull

Tue, 07/25/2017 - 17:45
So I've got a little problem, at least I hope it's little. I mentioned in a previous post that my hull pulled in a little and my deck spread a little before applying fiberglass. I taped the halves together last night and was able to get almost all of it aligned until I made it to the bow ...

Skin-on-Frame Folding kayak skins

Mon, 07/24/2017 - 19:51
I have been getting more interested in folding kayaks and the idea of traveling with them. So, keepers and Folbots are a bit high priced even used, but it looks likes the frames are available used for decent prices. My question is, has anyone fabricated a skin for one of these boats? Can it be ...

S&G: Petrel Staining the Hull

Mon, 07/24/2017 - 06:45
Greetings! I'm about to build my third S&G kayak, this time the SG Petrel from Nick Schade and CLC. I painted the hulls of my previous two boats bright yellow leaving the okoume on the deck. I really love the look and the added visibility on the water. Rather than painting the hull this time, I ...

Review seat spacing

Sun, 07/23/2017 - 02:15
Considering building a micro bootlegger this winter to replace my 21' double. Can it be assumed paddlers have to be in sync given the closeness of the seats? Have seen the pics on this site and would like to see more pics if anyone has a gallery I can view. Any pics of two adults underway? thxs

Epoxy Saving an old Kayak

Sat, 07/22/2017 - 12:01
Full disclosure I have never built a boat. My kayaking experience is limited to occasional outings on Hobie open cockpit boats with my wife and our two dogs. A new phase of kayaking may have entered my life with a discovery last summer when walking my dog. A neighbor was being relocated to senior ...
