Strip Pulyurethane glue for strips

Sun, 08/20/2017 - 02:56
I'm starting my deck soon on my strip job. For the hull I used Titebond II and it worked well. I am considering switching to polyurethane glue for the deck work. I read somewhere it was recommended since it would tolerate excess sunlight better than a water-based yellow glue. Any particular ...

Strip Deck Time!

Sat, 08/19/2017 - 16:30
Time to start the deck and a few questions .... 1. the first few deck sheer strips ... how do you terminate the ends, at the bow and stern? I'd like to see a few pics of how this should look. 2. I think I can discard the strongback at this point. I have the hull, with the internal forms, ...

Skin-on-Frame Ballistic nylon source in US?

Fri, 08/18/2017 - 10:16
I'm surprised I can't find any white ballistic nylon anywhere! Everyone seems to only sell black! I'm building some SOF kayaks with a few friends and thought that a bulk purchase might save a few bucks, rather than purchasing the precut length from Skin Boat School. Perhaps not, but I ...

Strip Made a mistake while correcting a mistake

Fri, 08/11/2017 - 15:58
I was fixing a mistake on my Guillemot build last night when I created another one. I used a heat gun to remove the fiberglass inside both ends of the hull so I could spread the hull to match the deck. The stern end came off fine. I marked the outline of the deck on a piece of plywood, offset the ...

S&G: Staining the Okoume

Fri, 08/11/2017 - 08:24
Hi All, I'm wondering if there's a good reason not to stain the assembled pieces of the hull or deck respectively. Nick stains a completed hull and a completed deck in the strip videos. Ideally, I'd like to do the same with the S&G boat. The hull will be one stain and the deck will be ...

Other Rank Your Top 5 Kayak Design Characteristics

Wed, 08/09/2017 - 09:43
If you had to list and rank the top 5 design characteristics of a kayak that you would design and use yourself, what would they be? My List (Note that I'm predominately a flatwater kayaker): 1. Lightweight. It can look great and paddle like a dream, but if it weighs 60lbs+ I'm probably not ...

Strip Completed Night Heron

Sat, 08/05/2017 - 09:57
I finished! Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and tips as I worked on this. Hard to believe that this was a box of wood strips in January. Took a bit longer than I'd planned, but I'm quite happy with the results for a first boat. Now to go out and paddle. https://youtu.be/0r3bos8BpBU

Strip Unfinished strip kayak project advice request

Thu, 08/03/2017 - 08:14
It's been a while since I've been on this forum. Something like 16 years! I'm looking for some advice on a potential project I'm considering taking on. The hull had been 90% striped and sanded then sold to a second owner who completed the hull but there are spots where the seams ...
