Skin-on-Frame: Corey's goop questions

Wed, 05/17/2017 - 10:21
Hi all, I'm finishing up a canoe (I know it's not a kayak!) that I've had lurking in my basement for 2 1/2 years. My wife is quite glad the frame is out of the basement finally! On my kayaks I have used spar varnish or an elstomeric called Jaxsan 600 to seal the nylon. For my canoe ...

Email marketing software is important for any business be it online or traditional "brick and mortar" biz since your customers are probably on the net even if you aren't. However, most of us do not really understand web marketing given that it is relatively new. The good news is that most good ...

Strip: Side (& other) Rabbet Planes *PIC*

Tue, 05/16/2017 - 09:25
Since Nick posted E5 of the (most excellent) Petrel Play build videos I've been somewhat obsessed with side rabbet planes. I'm hoping to build a Petrel Play sometime this summer and have been following along, building in my head, and trying to get everything in order before hand. When I ...

Strip Hatch size and location

Sun, 05/14/2017 - 07:17
I'm getting close to cutting out the hatches on my Night Heron. I made some paper templates to muck about with how big and where to place them. Below is what I have so far with a yardstick for scale. They seem quite large to me, and I'm concerned about (1) the strength of the hatch cover, ...

Other Lubricating skeg cables?

Thu, 05/11/2017 - 01:17
I have a composite kayak that I think would benefit by some lubrication to the skeg cable. I think if I stand the kayak on end I can drip some sort of lubricant into the end of the cable housing (there is access to it in the cockpit) and the lubricant may find its way down the length of the plastic ...

Strip Microbootlegger hatch?

Wed, 05/10/2017 - 13:06
I'm nearing the point of no return. Getting ready- I thought- to cut a deck hatch in a solo microbootlegger, but just wasn't feeling good about it. I searched the Internet and, well- I don't see ANYONE cutting hatches in microbootleggers. No deck rigging to speak of, either. An old ...

Epoxy Pigment

Wed, 05/10/2017 - 04:35
Hi all, I had posted a question on this topic a few weeks ago and wanted to report my experience. I was looking for a way to "color" the inside of the kayak without using a paint topcoat, and landed on adding pigment to epoxy. I didn't want to add pigment when laying the fiberglass- I ...

Strip Newbie question re strongback alignment

Sun, 05/07/2017 - 17:42
Hi All Before I get to my question here's a 5 second set up. I'm building the Guillemot L from purchased plans and have finished stripping the hull. I'm starting the plane/sand phase which should keep me occupied for a while. So far no biggie. I went to great lengths (probably too much) ...

Skin-on-Frame Floatation

Sun, 05/07/2017 - 04:07
I'm reskinning a couple of SOFs and I want to replace the float bags. The old ones are from Walden Kayaks. They seem pretty nice but that company appears to not be in business anymore. Any suggestions at which current brand is best? These are 17 and 18-foot baidarka style boats. TIA, Dan

Strip Gaps inside hull

Fri, 05/05/2017 - 18:14
I've got the outside of the hull and deck glassed and am sanding the inside of the hull. I didn't get the rolling bevels matched up very well on the first few strips around the curve. The joints look good on the outside but on the inside there is a gap nearly full length of the boat between ...
